The countdown to Black Friday 2018 is already on and for the first time I am super excited about black Friday because unlike previous years when I didn’t save up or plan for Black Friday, this year’s black Friday 2018, I actually have plans, exciting ones. But so as not to get carried away, I’ve come up with 10 black Friday 2018 shopping tips for the shopper who wants to spend less and buy more. And I’ll be spilling all the tea these shopping stores don’t want you to know.

    But first, what’s black Friday?

    Black Friday 2018 shopping tips

If you are wondering what black Friday is all about, although I think everyone’s got a fairly good idea of what black Friday is. Black Friday is the day after Thanksgiving celebrations in the United States. It usually signifies the first day of Christmas shopping season. There are a lot of stories surrounding how the name black Friday came to light but the most common one says black Friday is the name given to the Friday after Thanksgiving as retailers recorded the most profits on this day. And they record profits in black and losses in red, hence, the name black Friday was coined.

Black Friday has grown from being just one day of jaw breaking sales/discounts to a whole month of sales/discounts as most retail stores have dedicated all the Fridays in the month of November for Black Friday sales but nothing beats the mad sales on the exact black Friday and this 2018 black Friday falls on the 23rd of November, about a month from today.

Although black Friday started in the United States, it is now observed all over the world by many from brick and mortar stores to online stores.

Since 2005, black Friday has been recorded as the busiest shopping day of the year.

Tips & Tricks to get the best black Friday deals

    Black Friday 2018 shopping tips

    1. Draw a shopping list/budget: I am big on budgeting because I can be one hell of a spendthrift. So first start by drawing up a budget. Follow this process;

    • Total shopping budget for Black Friday sales 2018
    • Proceed to write a list of things you need.
    • Check prices for them and do your calculations.
    • Check your total shopping budget. If it exceeds, then draw up a scale of preference and eliminate some things on your list.

It’s easy to draw up a shopping list/budget but the hard part is sticking to it. And black Friday is one time you will get distracted and confused Because there are so many products on sale. But you’ve got to try to stick with your list/budget.

    2. Start early: This is one of the most important black Friday 2018 shopping tips. A lot of stores will be having sales all through the month of November. But some shoppers prefer to wait until the 23rd (black Friday) to do their shopping. This is totally understandable as the most discounts are on black Friday but here’s the reality, you are not the only one waiting until that day. So start your shopping early, you don’t have to wait until the D-Day to start buying.

3.Build a catalog: Before sales starts, look for those items you have on your list and add them to your cart or add to favourites. So you know the time they go on sales.Black Friday 2018 shopping tips

    4. Do your research: During black Friday sales, you can find the same product being offered at different prices. So don’t be too quick to buy an item. Rather take your time and do your research. Check if there are other sellers selling the same item for a lower price. To effectively do this, use price comparison sites like Google shopping, Pricena, Ng price hunter. There are so many price comparison sites out there. See a list of the top ten price comparison sites in Nigeria.

    5. Download the app: Most online shopping sites have a mobile app version. It’s best you download these apps as some sales are exclusive only on the app.

    6. Get Social: Use your social media to good use during black Friday, follow stores you intend to shop from during black Friday 2018, turn on post and story notifications so you get alerts immediately they make a post. Social Media is a big deal now and these stores use them to keep customers informed of what’s going on. So during black Friday, they will definitely be putting up posts on the best products on sales.

    7. Cross your T’s and Dot your I’s: One way to miss out on the best deals during black Friday is to not be properly prepared. A simple thing like wrong address can deprive you of that product. Because while you are struggling to put in the correct address, some others would have snagged the product. So ensure your card can be used for both local and international payments. I’ll advice you get the Zenith, GTB or Access MasterCards. These are cards I’ve used to pay for online purchases several times and they worked just fine. Also make sure your delivery details are correct.

    8. Be Alert: Black Friday is the day of time sensitive sales. You have to constantly be alert to cop time sensitive sales items. So stay woke, don’t sleep on this. Be on the look out for time sensitive sales, discount codes, vouchers, free shipping etc.Black Friday 2018 shopping tips

    9. Get acquainted with policies: some retail stores tweak their store policies on shipping and returns during black Friday sales. So take time out to check out their policies. I never took this serious until Nigerian YouTuber Dimma Umeh shared her experience with an online store’s return/refund policy on her channel which you should subscribe to because she’s amazing.

    10. Shop with friends: because shopping with the girls is always fun. You can plan to shop with your friends during black Friday. This way, you can split shipping fees and eventually spend less and save more.
