Habits To Give Up To Get A Glowing Skin

Getting a glowing skin is the goal of almost every woman. However it can be difficult to achieve base on different factors including but not limited to what we eat, hygiene, climate conditions, stress and so on. Our lifestyle especially little things you see as nothing may be the culprit behind all the zits. There are so many bad skin care habits. However, I will be focusing on five major ones. There are habits to give up to get a glowing skin that most people don’t know about or feel it is the normal thing. No it’s not!

In my quest for a clearer and glowing skin, I set out to find out possible causes of breakouts, hyper pigmentation and other skin issues. Surprisingly I stumbled on what I least expected. I found out having a glowing skin doesn’t just involve your skin care routine or what you eat. It also involves some things we barely imagined will be hindering our glowing skin goals. Needless to say I was pleasantly surprised and decided right there to share this new found knowledge with you all.

5 Habits To Give Up To Get A Glowing Skin

Habits to give up to get a glowing skin

    1. Excessive washing or cleansing of face:

So we have heard a thousand times of how important it is for our faces to be kept clean and free of dirt. So we are encouraged to wash our faces frequently and some people wash as much as 3-4 times daily. Well this can be bad for one’s skin especially if you have a dry skin. Washing excessively can strip your face of moisture and if you do not properly moisturize afterwards, your skin will begin to look dull and flaky. This doesn’t just apply to washing the face alone. Making use of facial cleansers more than twice daily isn’t going to give you the clear and glowing face you want but rather a dry and wrinkled face.

    2. Not Using Sunscreen:

So black skin don’t crack right? We know, our melanin be poppin’!. Sisters be preachin’ No UV rays shall come near us and so on. Can I get an amen? Amen sister, Amen.

To all my melanin sisters, Sorry to burst your bubble, black skin also suffers from sun exposure. You might not notice you are getting sun burns because obviously our skin is black but the truth is you are. But to me, that’s not even the most important reason why I think every black women should use a sunscreen. Sunburns can be dealt with but not cancer!

Studies have shown that too much sun exposure is one of the foremost causes of skin cancer and studies have also shown that sunscreen helps reduce the possibility of skin cancer but it doesn’t totally eradicate the possibilities. But I think whatever steps one can take to prevent cancer in any form, should not be played with.

    3. Using Cotton pillow cases:

Did this come as a shock to you? Because I was shocked when I found this. You might already be thinking if using Cotton pillow cases is a bad skin care habit, what is one to use then?.

The thing is, generally pressing your face into the pillow isn’t good as it can cause permanent creases/fine line. So it’s recommended that you swap your cotton pillowcase for a satin or silk pillowcase, as they cause less friction and hence less damage to your face.

    4. Washing the face with hot water:

A lot of us love to indulge in a hot shower after a crazy day. Sometimes even though we have heard a thousand times that we should wash our faces with lukewarm water, we still make the mistake of getting our faces pelted with hot water while in the shower.

Hot water is bad for your face because the skin on the face is much more sensitive than that on other parts of your body. Hot water can make the capillaries weak and in the long run, you will suffer from quick aging, wrinkles and dry skin.

    5. Picking Pimples:

I am a culprit when it comes to picking Pimples. I know it’s a bad skin care habit but still sometimes I can’t resist popping them open. It’s so distracting to see a funny bulge on my face, so at first I try to ignore the pimples until I get pissed and pick it. Most times, I end up injuring myself and causing a black head.

So I wasn’t surprised when I found out picking Pimples is one of the habits to give up to get a glowing skin.

Habits to give up to get a glowing skin

There are so many more habits but I decided to discuss these five because I feel most people don’t know them.

    So here are some others.

    • Using dirty makeup brushes: Always wash your makeup brushes. I wrote about how I got serious acne because I shared my makeup brushes and didn’t wash them. So to save my acne from getting worse, I had to wash/clean my makeup brushes and sponges.
    • Sleeping with makeup on
    • Not enough sleep
    • Excessive exfoliation etc.

All these are habits to give up to get a glowing skin. So if you have been doing everything right and your skin still looks wrong, you should quit these habits as soon as you can. And work towards cultivating healthy skin care habits.

So, cotton pillow cases aren’t only bad for the hair, they should be avoided for a glowing skin too, that’s a new one! I rub my face well on cotton pillow cases.
One would think washing the face well enough would make it glow o. So, there’s an excessive washing, interesting.
I practise the others, except the sunscreen! I should get one soon.

      Thanks for sharing, Gift.

It depends on your skin type and budget but Neutrogena hydro boost sunscreen is pretty good.

I think when people talk about skin care, they often forget that there are so many major factors that can hinder your skin from glowing, beyond the types of pillow case you use and so on. I have come to realise what you eat, drink and do actually affects the health of skin the most like consuming too much sugar and unhealthy foods, drinking less water, not detoxing, consuming more alcohol than you do water and so on actually affects your skin the most. Like weight loss, 80% of your healthy skin is a result of what you put inside your body; if your body is healthy, your skin will glow…

I like this post, I just wish it hammered on the least talked about habits (but most important) to give up to have a glowing skin…

      Well done…

Yes Alice but that wasn’t my aim with this post. In the beginning I started that people think bad skincare habits are limited to what you eat and so. The aim was to address a few that I feel most people don’t already know about. However you made a salient point. So maybe I’ll working on a general bad skincare post. Thanks for commenting
