The filming locations for this award-winning series is a medieval dream come true! If you are a travel enthusiast with an inkling for historical travelling/explorations like I am, you will find the Game of Thrones Filming Locations to be everything you’ve ever wished for.
As the buzz for season 8 reached its apex, I was one of those who got sucked in the frenzy of re-watching all the previous episodes of game of thrones, yes, right from season 1! Although I must say what I did was more of a skim through, but that singular activity helped give me a better understanding of the story and more importantly since I was re-watching without all the heartaches that come with suspense, I was able to truly take in the scenery. The goal was to keep my GoT memory fresh in anticipation of the final season but I ended up fueling my “wanderlust”, So without further ado, here’s a list of my top 3 Game of Thrones Filming Locations.
Top Game of Thrones Filming Locations Every Travel Enthusiast Should Visit.
Grjotaga Cave, Iceland
The Grjotaga cave is the famous cave where one of the finest Game of Thrones lovemaking scenes was shot. The Grjotaga cave is a lava cave which houses a thermal spring. Do you remember the oh-so-steamy scene in season three where Jon Snow and Ygritte swam and made out? That scene’s real-life location is this cave and since then, it has become a tourist hotspot. And this is no surprise, seeing that Jon and Ygritte became a real-life couple. I bet people throng there in high hopes of finding a picture perfect love. This is one must-visit Game of Thrones filming location.
The Moroccan Port City of Essaouira
When Deanery’s recruited the unsullied to join her army, it was at this bay. Essaouira which is two hours from the famous city of Marrakesh was the real-life location of Astapor and the front of this bay was where the unsullied pledged their fierce loyalty for the Dragon Queen. Essaouira is such a beautiful city and it is listed as one of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Essaouira is definitely a Game of Thrones filming locations to visit; with its strong historical background, rich culture and close proximity to Touristy cities like Marrakech.
Sibenik, Croatia
Arya is one of my favourite characters in Game of Thrones and I followed through with her training at the “mystic/mysterious” temple of the faceless men. I was elated when I found out that Braavos wasn’t a “mysterious” island but is the l city of Sibenik in Croatia. Sibenik is such a historical city and it proudly owns two UNESCO world heritage sites; St James Cathedral and St Nicholas Fortress.
There are so many Game of Thrones filming locations to visit but these three are top on my list.
